CHAPTER 1. Introduction to newsgroups
Finding the difference between free and paid servers:
Usenet is available as a free service and as a paid service, the difference between these two is massive
What to expect with free servers:
- Low retention* usually under 100 days (~3 months)
- Incomplete downloads
- No full speed guaranteed (more like 50kb/s)
What to expect with paid servers:
- High retention* usually above 1100 days (~3 years)
- Non-corrupt downloads
- Full download speed guaranteed.
* number of days that the post will exist
Content:
The content that is available on usenet is accessible for everyone, free or paid. Free servers don't reach far in the past though,
also they have way more incomplete downloads then the paid servers, the content that is available to you depends on your retention.
To get an impression of the content on usenet please take a look here:
Binsearch
Advantages of Newsgroups:
- Full download speed
- Download 24/7 without limits
- Anonymous downloading
- Largest content available worldwide (~4 petabytes, that's 4 million gigabytes of data)
- Optional: SSL Connections (secure connection)
- Download format (RAR Parts + PAR2)
- No need for uploading
The provider I use is Eweka you should visit the site and look how awesome Eweka is.
Costs: 7.50 euro per month. Totally worth it!
Go take a look on internet to find the right provider for you, it won't be hard to find a good local provider.
CHAPTER 2. Software Requirements and Configuration
1. Spotnet
Spotnet is an application which you can use to find all kinds of spots (downloads).
The only downside is that its Dutch, and has no option to set it to English.
Luckily Dutch looks allot like English, so
it can't be that hard to learn it ;)
Download Spotnet
Download
.NET Framework 4
Once you downloaded both files, first install .NET Framework 4 and then install Spotnet.
When you start Spotnet you will have to enter the details
of your newsprovider:

After filling in your account details click on "Verbinden" this means "Connect"
Now Spotnet will go searching for all spots. This may take a while...
When it's finished you will see a large list of spots (downloads)
(This screenshot is made with the Spotnet Improver addon + FTD Look installed to Spotnet, an addon you should really download)
Now go to Bewerken > Downloadknop > Choose your desired setting
(Edit > Downloadbutton)
(If you choose "Download", Spotnet will download/repair/extract the files and you don't need Grabit/Winrar/Quickpar, go to Chapter 3)
(If you choose "NZB Openen", Grabit will open the NZB and download the files, recommended)
(If you choose "NZB Opslaan", The NZB will be saved to your computer)
2.
Grabit
Grabit is a free newsgrabber, this allows you to download NZB files, these files contain all parts of posts.
Grabit has the possibility to check your rar parts for CRC errors (and fix them) and unpack your files,
Download Grabit
When you downloaded and installed Grabit, Start it and you will get the configuration wizard.

Press next and enter your newsserver:

Press next and enter your account details

Now press next to finish

Click
Finish.
Now Grabit will automatically start downloading the Groups List.
Right click your
server > Server Properties

Now this window will appear:

Set the max allowed connections. (Spotnet also needs 1 connection to browse the posts)
Click Ok.
Now go to Edit > Preferences > Folders. You can change the download folders here.

Now go to Advanced and check "Automatically retry items in batch"

Go to Repair and Extract and choose your desired settings. I chose to turn it off because I like to do it manually.
If you choose to turn it on you don't need to download Winrar and Quickpar.

Press Ok to finish configuring Grabit.
3. Winrar
This nice little archiver you probably already have, can be downloaded here
No further explanation
needed I guess. You need winrar to unpack the RAR parts.
Download and install it, needs no further configuration
4. Quickpar
Quickpar is essential when you are downloading from newsgroups.
All RAR parts come with PAR2 files, these great files can repair your downloads if they are damaged.
Download Quickpar, if you start Quickpar for the first time, this window will appear:
Change the settings according to the image below

You are now ready to download files!
CHAPTER 3. Downloading Files
I am going to show you 2 different scenarios of downloading, depending on the "Downloadknop" setting.
First Scenario: Downloading with Spotnet (Bewerken > Downloadknop > Downloaden)
1. Open Spotnet and search for any desired download, in this case I chose "Top 100 betaalde Android Games uit de Market"
(Top 100 best paid games from the market)
2. Click the blue download button to start your download
When the download is finished it will automatically be repaired (if needed) and extracted, this way of downloading is very easy but doesn't come with the greatest reliability
Second scenario: Downloading with Grabit (Bewerken > Downloadknop > NZB Openen/Opslaan)
1. Open Spotnet and search for any desired download, in this case I chose "Top 100 betaalde Android Games uit de Market"
(Top 100 best paid games from the market)

2. Click the blue download button to open the NZB in Grabit
As you see this download view is way more extended, also it just downloads faster then Spotnet, because 1 connection is always used for Spotnet itself.
3. When the download is finished click on "Download Folder"

CHAPTER 4. Repair and Extract
1. Open the small par2 file which is almost always the first file in the list. Now Quickpar will start checking if there are any damaged files

As you see there are 2 damaged files, which would be dramatic if you downloaded it from a torrent or so, but not on Usenet!
2. Click "Repair" to start the repairing.

After the repair process, your files are successfully repaired!

3. Go to the download folder again and right click the first part of the download and choose "Extract here" or "Extract to to /xxx"

Now the extracting process will executed and after that you have successfully downloaded a usenet post

Here is your final output:

CHAPTER 5. How to post on usenet
To post something on usenet you need Powerpost, this powerful tool allows you to upload files on the newsservers.
You also need Winrar and Quickpar but I assume you already installed those.
To make a correct post:
1.
Put the files that you want to upload in a folder (in this case its only 1 south park episode)

2. Right click the file(s)
> Add to archive...

3. Now Winrar will open,
you can change the compression method, I chose for store since it's a video.
You have to split the archive in multiple parts by filling in an amount of mb's. I chose for 25mb parts, 354mb / 25mb = 15 parts

The reason you need to split it in parts is because else you cannot take advantage of the extreme download speeds.
Press OK to create the archive parts.

4. Now you will have an output like this:

5. Now start Quickpar and move the rar parts into Quickpar

You can leave the default settings here, you could change the redundancy, this is how much percent of the parts can be absent.
6. Press Create to start creating your par files.

7. When the process is done you will have an output like this:

That's a complete usenet post!
To upload files to correct way.
1. Open Powerpost > Options > Program Settings, fill in newsserver info

Press OK
2. Move the files you created earlier into Powerpost. Now this window will appear

The subject is the first tab, you can change the name of the post here, I always keep the default settings
3. Now click on the "Newsgroups" tab and choose the desired newsgroups to put your post on

Always choose alt.binaries.boneless, this is the standard group for all downloads.
You can check a list of newsgroups here
4. You can skip the "File order" tab because that's already fixed if you post it the way this tutorial explains it.
Go to the Checksums and NZB tab and check the box "Create .NZB File"

Now
press Ok to complete configuring your post.
5.
Now click on the envelope with the arrow to start posting your files
![]()

When your files are finished uploading you can use the .NZB file to download
the files. The .NZB file can be found in the directory where your files are (step 7 dir)
Now that you have successfully posted something on usenet, you can add your download to Spotnet
1. Start Spotnet > Bestand > Toevoegen (File > Add)
2.
You don't need my instructions to post what you uploaded, but here are some translations from Dutch
